How to play Syllogism

Read two short statements and pick what must be true because of them. Use only the statements, not real-life knowledge.

Syllogism, mid-game
Syllogism, mid-game.

Goal

Decide which conclusion, if any, is guaranteed by two or three premises.

How to play

  1. You are shown premises such as "All doctors are teachers" or "Some pilots are not chefs".
  2. Pick the conclusion that must be true whenever the premises are true, or choose that no conclusion follows.
  3. Judge by logic only. The statements do not need to be true in real life.
  4. After answering, the explanation shows a possible world where the premises hold but the conclusion fails.
  5. On Expert, arguments have three premises and each one has a two-minute countdown.
Before you start: choose a mode, rounds and difficulty, then press Start game.

Example

"All cats are animals. Tom is a cat." So Tom must be an animal.

"Some birds can swim. Some swimmers are fish." Nothing follows about birds and fish, so pick "No conclusion follows".

Tips

  • "All A are B" does not mean any A exist, and "Some" means at least one.
  • Two negative premises, or two "Some" premises, never guarantee a conclusion.
  • If you can imagine a world where the premises hold and the conclusion fails, that conclusion is not guaranteed.
  • About a third of the questions have no valid conclusion, so do not assume one exists.

Scoring

  • Every correct answer is worth 100 points, scaled by difficulty (Easy ×0.8, Medium ×1, Hard ×1.3, Expert ×1.6).
  • Answering within 3 seconds adds a 25-point speed bonus.
  • Each answer in a row adds a 15-point streak bonus, up to 10 in a row.
  • Using a hint halves the points for that answer and skips the bonuses. Hints are only available on Easy and Medium.
  • Your score, streak and achievements are saved to your account when the game ends.
